Ladies and Gentleman,
When Chinese Centre of ITI expressed its desire to hold a word congress of ITI a few years ago, we were all excited about the idea as we all knew that China can do wonder. Our belief was reiterated when we saw the magnificent opening ceremony of the Theatre of Nations in Nanjing in 2008. We visited Xiamen a few months ago to see the sites of the congress and talk to the local authorities. We were highly impressed by the eagerness of the authorities and artists here to hold the congress in Xiamen. We are here today to formally announce before you that the stage is now set for holding the 33rd world congress of the International Theatre Institute from September 19 to 24, 2011 in Xiamen.
For that week in September, Xiamen will turn to be the theatre capital of the world. We are hoping that more than 300 theatre makers will come here from all corners of the world for this biggest biennial event of ITI. ITI congress is an interesting blending of statutory obligations of this largest organization of performing arts in the world with artistic encounters. We from distant landers will be able to have a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of China. On the other hand, Chinese theatre makers will get the opportunity of exchanging their knowledge with their colleagues from other countries.
We are all aware of the power of theatre and that is a strong reason why we have dedicated ourselves to this field. In today’s world of conflict, oppression and exploitation, theatre can play the role of peace makers and create an atmosphere of mutual understanding between nations and culture.
We know our colleague in China have been working very hard to make the next congress a memorable one. I’d like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr. Ji Guoping, Mr. Luo Caifu and their teams for their diligent work. Today we have come her all the way from far away places like Paris, New York, Khartoum, Berlin and Dhaka to express our confidence on the Chinese organizers and we only hope that Xiamen congress will be the best congress ever in the history of ITI.
I, on behalf of my colleagues in ITI, thank very sincerely all involved in organizing the congress and solicit your cooperation in promoting this event worldwide.
President of International Theatre Institute Worldwide
