2nd China Campus Theatre Festival
Speech by Ramendu Majumdar
President worldwide, International Theatre Institute
Distinguished guests, young friends participating in the Festival, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Very good evening to you all. It is indeed a great pleasure for me and my colleagues from the International Theatre Institute to be present here in this cultural city of Shanghai for the opening of the Second Campus Theatre Festival. I warmly congratulate all the organisations who have sponsored this major biennial event.
When we go to witness a performance by the students, we expect to see something new, something different than the usual ones. Because we strongly believe that the young minds can think differently with their imagination and creativity. It is always the fresh blood that can nourish the artistic life of a society.
International Theatre Institute, which happens to be the largest network of performing arts in the world today, has always put great emphasis on the arts education at all levels of the education system to create citizens who will enrich their lives with human values taking essence from the arts education. Only then we can have a tolerant, peaceful and forward looking new world. The performing arts not only entertain people, but serve as a tool for development also to make our planet a better place to live.
International Theatre Institute which advances UNESCO’s goals of mutual understanding and peace, has recently founded the World Performing Arts Academy to meet the training needs around the member countries. ITI/UNESCO chair has been working for a long time with theatre schools offering short courses and organising workshops and festivals. ITI’s Theatre Education and Training Committee has also got its projects in different countries.
We have seen brilliant organisation of ITI’s Theatre of Nations Festival in Nanjing, China in 2008. We are eagerly looking forward to the near future when China will be able to hold the next World Congress of the International Theatre Festival. We are confident, China can do wonders.
We are grateful to the organisers of this Festival for their warm hospitality offered to me and my ITI colleagues who have come from different countries to experience the rich culture of China.
Thank you all.
